A Look at the Medical Administrative Assistant Career Field
A medical administrative assistant is a job description that is different from a medical assistant. While medical assistants, certified medical assistants and registered medical assistants perform clinical hands-on duties in treatment areas most often an administrative professional stays in the office. There are many different tasks that can be done by an administrative assistant, once called the medical secretary. However there is specialized education required before you will be qualified to work in the office of a physician or hospital.
You will most likely need to attend a two-year college (although your program may not take that long) or a vocational school. High school students have the advantage of taking their vocational training to become a medical secretary while they are still in school. If you are an adult who wants a new career, you might want to check with a vocational school as well as a two-year college because some of these institutions have flexible adult education programs in many different areas of study. For example you can take your courses in the evening if you work during the day.
There are many different aspects of being a successful administrative professional in a medical office. You will be called upon to answer telephones, schedule appointments, record patient data, file various documents, perform medical transcription and billing, and much more. These are specialized skills that must be learned in school and via hands-on training before you will be qualified to do them. Medical office assistants, as they are sometimes called, stay busy all day with a wide variety of clerical duties.
Getting your medical administrative assistant training is one of the best things you'll ever do, especially if you've always wanted to work in a medical setting but don't care for the more graphic parts of nursing. For example, if you are needle phobic or faint at the sight of blood you are better off as a medical administrative assistant. As far as the spreading of germs, these assistants usually work behind glass to prevent this from occurring as much as possible. It is important in this field to practice regular handwashing and/or use a hand sanitizing product on a regular basis throughout the day, even if you have limited exposure to the patients.
