The Importance of Having Your Medical Assistant Associate Degree
At first glance, the term medical assistant may not sound like a job for which a degree is required. On the contrary, you will need a medical assistant associate degree from an accredited educational facility before you will even be considered for work in this field. This is because even though you are an assistant, many of your tasks are highly specialized for the medical field and require special training. The best place to look for a medical assistant program is at a community college that offers this program. The medical assistant certificate you earn is your way to get a foot in the door.
There will always be a need for qualified medical assistants. You can even go a step further and take the Certified Medical Assistant exam. This exam is only given three times per year, however there are more than 200 testing locations all over the country. You are sure to find one that is close or within reasonable distance from you. There are preparatory materials that can help you get ready for the exam, which basically reiterates what you learned in school about being a medical assistant.
Just because you have an Associate's degree in medical assisting it does not make you a certified medical assistant. As mentioned before, the only way to earn this badge of honor is to take (and pass) the proper exam. After that, you may want to shoot for the Registered Medical Assistant exam, which requires you have more work experience before being able to take the exam and is a more prestigious title to hold. While a job as a medical assistant might feel like you are starting at the bottom, there are plenty of advantages to this career.
For example, when you earn your medical assistant associate degree and get out into the working world, you will find there is rarely a dull moment. One minute you might be taking blood pressure or a patient's temperature, the next you might be filing or answering phones. This career is very fulfilling because it exposes you to many aspects of working in the medical field. If you want to move up in the world, see if your employer offers tuition reimbursement. This means they will help you pay for your education as long as it relates to pursuing a position in the same field. For example, you could go to nursing school in the evenings and work as a medical assistant during the day.
