Common Medical Assistant Duties

If you are considering a career as a medical assistant, it helps to first learn as much about this line of work as you possibly can. Medical assistant employment can be rewarding and satisfying for certain people but first you have to make sure it is something you are cut out for. One way to figure this out is to look over medical assistant duties and decide whether or not you feel like you could perform them with the proper education and training. In order to become a medical assistant, you must complete an accredited program that can take as long as two years.

Medical assistants do all kinds of things both in the clinical and administrative areas of doctor's offices. They may also be employed with hospitals, clinics and other facilities. There are lots of different places you can work, but often the tasks are similar. For example, you may be called upon to fill in at the front office if they are short. This might involve answering phones, filing records, bookkeeping, dealing with insurance claims, scheduling appointments and more. Usually a medical secretary does these things but sometimes medical assistants help out also.

In the clinical realm, medical assistants may give vaccinations, take blood samples, urine samples, run certain tests, take blood pressure readings, temperature readings and other vital sign readings. This might include an ECG test or oxygen reading. In addition, some medical assistants help the doctor during the actual exam. And, they prepare the rooms for each patient, look over the patient's chart and get it ready for the doctor. Not to mention a medical assistant is often responsible to make the patient comfortable prior to the exam.

There are some medical assistant duties that you will enjoy more than others. Some people love the clinical setting, where they are up close with patients and doctors. Of course if you are squeamish or afraid of blood you would be more comfortable in the front office. This is why some medical assistant students decide they'd rather be medical administrative assistants instead. However, for the right kind of person, a career as a medical assistant can be a wonderful decision that can have a positive impact on your entire life. Just make sure you really want to do it because education and training is expensive and time-consuming.
