A Brief Guide to Medical Assistant Work
In any physician's office, hospital or other medical facility it takes a team of professionals to keep things running smoothly. One of those professionals is the medical assistant. There should always be medical assistant job openings because there is always going to be a need for assistance in medical facilities. Positions open up when other assistants leave their job or upgrade their job position. For example, a physician's assistant is a step up from the position of medical assistant. Medical assistant work is rewarding, exciting and pays consistent with the training and education required.
If you want a medical assistant position, you need the proper training. For those still in high school, consider taking a medical assistant program at the vocational school if that is an option for you. Even if you are far from being a high school student some vocational centers offer day and evening courses for adults as well. Then there are 1 to 2 year community colleges which often offer medical assistant programs. The length of the program and the criteria required to work in this field varies by state.
One thing is for sure, you shouldn't get bored in this career field. Medical assistant positions often require multitasking and doing different types of work in one day. This may mean one minute you're taking a blood sample and the next you're answering the phone. Basically you just do whatever it is that your superior needs you to do under your job description. If you love people, this might be a good job for you because excellent interpersonal skills are required to make patients feel at ease.
Wondering about medical assistant pay? Median earnings are approximately $26,290 but you may make more or less than that depending on your state, what kind of medical facility you are working at, how long you've been on the job and a host of other factors. While you might start out with medical assistant work at entry level pay, there are often opportunities for advancement and you can always further your education if you so choose. Some employers will even help reimburse tuition if you are studying to move up in your current workplace. All in all, a career as a medical assistant pays a reasonable amount, is rewarding and there is always a need somewhere.
